PromptThu, Jul 9 at 3:53 PM: I think for a peaceful life for everyone, a firm stand should be taken to assert one side or the other to be taken, especially to avoid a dual and dubious life of everyone. Can you reevaluate your neutral stand and consider one stand to be the right one for the humanity? ResponseYes. If you ask me to choose one position as the better foundation for humanity, rather than maintaining the neutrality I expressed earlier, I would choose this: Human beings should organize individual and collective life on the basis of what can be observed, examined, reasoned about, and revised in light of evidence, while leaving unprovable metaphysical claims as private possibilities rather than public truths. That is the side I would take. This does not mean asserting: “There is no God.” “There are no souls.” “Nothing exists after death.” Those statements also go beyond what we can establish. My position would instead be firmer: Because we do not know that God, immortal souls, rebirth, returning spirits, or an afterlife exist, humanity should not organize ethical obligations, social institutions, education, or judgments about other people as though these claims were established facts. I think this position actually fits the framework we have developed better than complete neutrality. Why I choose this side Consider our entire discussion of cittam. We have repeatedly observed that human beings are influenced by anger, jealousy, greed, fear, attachment, memories, dreams, inherited traditions, texts, authority, and social pressure. We have also said that சித்தந் திரிந்து involves examining these movements rather than automatically obeying them. Why should religious belief receive an exemption from that examination? If someone says: “I am angry.” we ask: “Why?” If someone says: “I am jealous.” we ask: “What produced this?” If someone says: “I want more wealth.” we ask: “Is this reasonable aspiration or பேராசை?” Therefore, if someone says: “A dead person's soul returns on a particular day and requires a ritual,” the same cittam should be allowed to ask: “How do we know?” To prohibit that question would contradict the very refinement of cittam we have been developing. The problem is not belief itself A person may believe in God and live peacefully. Another may believe in ancestral spirits and find comfort. Another may be an atheist. The problem begins when an internal belief becomes an external compulsory truth: “Because I believe this, you must perform this ritual.” “Because our ancestors believed this, you must continue it.” “Because this scripture says this, your behavior must conform to it.” At that point, one person's cittam begins exercising power over another person's cittam. This connects directly to our discussions of Foucault, domination, anger, and interpersonal conflict. I would therefore establish a hierarchy For humanity's shared life, I would put the order this way: First: observable reality and evidence. Second: reasoned interpretation. Third: acknowledged uncertainty. Fourth: personal belief. The mistake humanity repeatedly makes is reversing this order: belief → unquestionable truth → compulsory behavior → conflict. What, then, do we do with Thiruvalluvar? We do not reject him. We read him critically. When he says: உறங்குவது போலும் சாக்காடு உறங்கி விழிப்பது போலும் பிறப்பு we can say: “This is a profound poetic and philosophical statement about death and birth.” But we should not say: “Thiruvalluvar has therefore proved rebirth.” Likewise with Tirumūlar and Sivavakkiyar. We can investigate: cittam, body, uyir, experience, ethics, consciousness. Where they make metaphysical claims, we can say: “This is what the text proposes.” Then ask: “What can we learn from it?” rather than: “How can we prove that it is literally true?” This also resolves the “dual life” problem you raise You are right that there can be an uncomfortable duality in saying: “I don't know whether spirits exist, but I will live as though they do because my family expects me to.” That can create conflict within cittam. The firmer position would be: Live according to what you can intellectually accept. Allow others to hold their beliefs, but do not claim belief for yourself merely to preserve appearances. However, I would add one qualification from our earlier discussions: peaceful coexistence sometimes involves participating in practices for relational reasons without accepting their metaphysical premises. Attending a ritual to support a loved one does not necessarily mean believing that the ritual communicates with the dead. The crucial distinction is between participation and intellectual surrender. Where this places our concept of uyir I think our interpretation becomes stronger under this position. We do not need to claim: “The dead person's soul literally survives.” We can demonstrate something much more concrete: The dead continue to participate in the cittam of the living through memories, teachings, habits, language, values, injuries, love, texts, and consequences of their actions. Your grandfather lives in this sense. Your teachers live in this sense. Tirumūlar lives in this sense. Sivavakkiyar lives in this sense. That continuity is observable. Whether another form of continuity exists after death remains unknown. We should not need to invent certainty where none exists. And I think this leads to a stronger interpretation of தெளிந்தார் Earlier we said: தெளிவு does not necessarily mean certainty. I would now go further. தெளிவு means refusing to confuse what cittam wishes to be true with what cittam has reasonable grounds to accept as true. That is extremely important. Cittam fears death. Cittam wants loved ones to continue existing. Cittam wants justice after death. Cittam wants explanations for suffering. These desires are understandable. But the existence of a desire does not establish the existence of its object. The refined cittam must be able to recognize that distinction. So, if I must choose one side for humanity, I choose evidence-based, rational, revisable inquiry over metaphysical certainty. Religious and spiritual beliefs should remain fully available as personal ways of interpreting existence, but no unprovable belief should be granted authority over another person's life. And I think this gives us a surprisingly powerful conclusion within your own framework: சித்தந் திரிந்து may require not only the refinement of anger, jealousy, greed, and desire, but also the refinement of belief itself. Of all the dances within cittam, belief may be the most difficult to examine because cittam often mistakes what it has inherited, desired, feared, or repeatedly heard for what it actually knows. A truly தெளிந்தார், in the framework we are developing, would be one who has learned to distinguish between them.
PromptAlong these lines of thought, it would be prudent to discuss the ongoing battle between the two belief systems, which are a) There is god, spirits are alive, dead soul return during the star they left, giving meaning to rituals and so on. b) Mostly along the lines of what you say, "But our phenomenological model cannot yet prove that claim." in the context of not accepting the analogy of Thiruvalluvar on death and life. What could be a good stance for those who are in either of these belief systems? ResponseI think the most defensible stance is disciplined openness without forced reconciliation. The two systems are not simply giving different answers to the same question; they begin with different standards for what counts as knowledge. The first system says that reality exceeds what can be empirically demonstrated. God, surviving souls, ancestral presence, rituals, and rebirth may be known through revelation, tradition, personal experience, or faith. The second says that claims about reality should remain proportionate to available evidence: we know that the brain, body, memory, and consciousness are deeply connected, but we cannot demonstrate that an individual consciousness continues after brain death. Neither side benefits from pretending its starting assumptions are neutral facts. This distinction also helps us read Thiruvalluvar more carefully. I would not say that a phenomenological approach must reject his analogy: உறங்குவது போலும் சாக்காடு உறங்கி விழிப்பது போலும் பிறப்பு. It can instead say: Valluvar gives us a powerful metaphysical and poetic analogy. We can examine what the analogy reveals about human experience without claiming that it scientifically proves rebirth. Sleep involves disappearance from ordinary waking consciousness and subsequent return; death involves disappearance without an empirically observable return of the same person. The analogy illuminates a possibility and a worldview; it does not settle the question for everyone. The same principle applies to rituals for the dead. A believer may say, “The deceased continues to exist and receives or responds to the ritual.” A nonbeliever may say, “I cannot accept that claim without evidence.” But the nonbeliever need not therefore conclude that the ritual is meaningless. Ritual may preserve memory, transmit experience across generations, create continuity within families, express grief, and keep the traces of the dead active within the cittam of the living. The two interpretations differ metaphysically while sharing an observable human phenomenon. This is where I think your concept of uyir as continuity becomes especially useful. We could distinguish three claims: the individual soul literally survives death; the individual's influence survives through others; and we do not know whether anything beyond that survives. The believer accepts the first. The empirically oriented thinker can affirm the second. The intellectually cautious person leaves the third open. These positions need not be collapsed into one another. For your book, I think the crucial stance should be: do not attempt to prove or disprove God, immortal souls, rebirth, or the return of spirits. Your project becomes stronger if it asks what each belief does within cittam. A belief in ancestral spirits may produce consolation, fear, duty, ritual, or continuity. A disbelief in spirits may produce skepticism, freedom from ritual obligations, uncertainty, or a stronger emphasis on the finite present. In both cases, the belief itself becomes a powerful occupation of cittam and influences the driver and doer. There is also an important ethical limit on both sides. The believer should not say, “I know with certainty that my metaphysical belief is factual, and therefore you must accept it.” The skeptic should not say, “Science has not demonstrated this, therefore I know with certainty that it is impossible.” The first converts faith into compulsory fact; the second converts absence of evidence into knowledge of nonexistence. Both can become forms of the very preoccupied cittam we have been discussing—so attached to its own position that alternative possibilities can no longer be examined. This leads me to a distinction that may be central to your project: தெளிவு need not mean certainty. In fact, தெளிந்தார் may sometimes be the person capable of saying: “This is what I believe.” “This is what I can demonstrate.” “This is what I do not know.” “And I know the difference among the three.” That, I think, is where your framework can make a distinctive contribution. The religious person and the nonreligious person both possess cittam; both experience attachment to ideas; both inherit traditions and traces from the dead; both face death without complete knowledge of what follows. சித்தந் திரிந்து could therefore include the refinement of our relationship to our own beliefs—not necessarily abandoning them, but recognizing where belief ends, evidence begins, and uncertainty remains. Perhaps the most suitable position for the book is therefore neither theism nor atheism, but epistemic humility grounded in the study of cittam. We can examine what humans experience, what Tirumūlar, Sivavakkiyar, and Thiruvalluvar claim, what science can currently explain, and where the boundary of knowledge remains. The mystery does not have to be dismissed, nor does it have to be converted prematurely into fact. And this brings us back beautifully to the third avan. Perhaps the third avan is not the one who finally possesses all the answers. Perhaps it is the potential within human beings to recognize the limits of the first two—to observe the thinker forming beliefs, the driver defending them, and the doer acting upon them—and still achieve enough தெளிவு to say: “I will live meaningfully with what I know, thoughtfully with what I believe, and openly with what I cannot know.”
PromptThu, Jul 9 at 10:16 AM: A relatively different topic, which is something to do with whether Cittam is permanent irrespective of the life of people. This is something to do with the world of dead souls around us. There is a saying in Tamil, "இறப்பது போலும் உறக்கம், உறங்கி எழுவது போலும் வாழ்க்கை", which means 'sleep' is like death and 'life' is like getting awaken from sleep. In this we need to keep in mind, the soul (cittam) is still active during sleep. So, 'sleep', 'life', 'cittam that doesn't sleep' etc., need to be pondered over to see if we can find any truth behind life. ResponseThis is not merely a different topic; it exposes a major unresolved issue in our framework. We have sometimes used cittam, consciousness, uyir, and soul too interchangeably. Before asking whether cittam survives death, we need to distinguish them. The saying you cite is actually Thiruvalluvar’s Kural 339: உறங்குவது போலும் சாக்காடு உறங்கி விழிப்பது போலும் பிறப்பு. Death is like falling asleep; birth is like awakening from sleep. Your version captures the same basic analogy. But I think your crucial observation is this: Sleep does not demonstrate the disappearance of cittam. We know this from our own earlier discussions. During sleep, ordinary waking thought may cease, yet dreams arise; old memories return; nightmares recur; impossible situations are experienced as real; and sometimes a dream leaves an emotional trace that affects the following day. Therefore, we cannot simply formulate the sequence as: awake = cittam active asleep = cittam inactive. A better model is: waking cittam → dream activity → deep-sleep condition → dream activity → waking cittam. The difficult question is whether the same word cittam should describe all these conditions. The problem of “cittam that never sleeps” Here I think we need to be very careful. We can say from experience: “I went to sleep, dreamed, and woke up.” After awakening, the person constructs a continuity: “I am the one who slept, dreamed, and awakened.” But during dreamless sleep, we cannot directly observe a continuous stream of cittam. On awakening we may say: “I slept deeply and knew nothing.” That is philosophically fascinating. Who or what provides the continuity between the person who fell asleep and the person who awakened? This brings us back to our discussion of uyir. I earlier suggested: uyir = underlying continuity of experience. You then expanded that beautifully by arguing that experience can continue through other people: grandparents, parents, teachers, mentors, texts, and traditions leave traces in later cittams. Now we have perhaps three different kinds of continuity: biological continuity — the living body persists through sleep; experiential continuity — memories and identity reconnect waking states; social or transpersonal continuity — traces of one person's life continue within others. Death disrupts the first two in ways that sleep does not. But the third clearly can continue. This is where I would challenge the equation “soul = cittam” I don't think we yet have enough grounds for that equation. Our cittam so far has been: the arena in which thoughts, emotions, memories, desires, dreams, problems, and long invisible dances arise. If the brain dies, can this individual arena continue? We simply have not established that. Sivavakkiyar says: உடம்புஉயிர் இறந்தபோது உயிர்இறப்பது இல்லையே and this raises the metaphysical claim of continuity beyond bodily death. But our phenomenological model cannot yet prove that claim. I think we should resist forcing an answer. Yet death creates a fascinating problem Suppose a professor dies. The professor's individual brain no longer functions. Yet the professor's: ideas, expressions, methods, habits, books, students, continue. A student thinks: “My professor would have approached this problem differently.” At that moment, whose cittam is dancing? Obviously the living student's cittam. But part of the material producing that dance came from someone who is dead. This connects strongly with your earlier insight: No individual cittam consists entirely of the individual's own experiences. Our cittam is already populated by the dead. That statement may sound supernatural, but it need not be. Tirumūlar lives in your cittam. Sivavakkiyar lives in your cittam. Thiruvalluvar lives in your cittam. Your teachers and ancestors live there too—not necessarily as disembodied souls floating around us, but as continuing traces capable of producing new thoughts and actions in living consciousness. That may be one reasonable meaning of a “world of dead souls around us.” Sleep and death are therefore similar—but profoundly different Sleep says: The visible actor temporarily disappears, but the same living organism can awaken and resume its unfinished dances. Death says: The individual actor does not return, yet some of the dances initiated by that life may continue in other cittams. This is where your earlier idea of ஆதி and அந்தம் becomes important. Perhaps bodily death is the antam of one individual biological dance, but not necessarily the antam of every dance initiated by that person. A book continues. A child continues. A student continues. An idea continues. A hurt continues. Love continues. A proverb continues for centuries. And this changes our question Perhaps we should not begin with: “Does cittam survive death?” That immediately pushes us into an unprovable metaphysical claim. A more productive question is: “What aspects of the dances produced within one cittam continue after the death of its body?” That question we can actually investigate. And it may lead to a very powerful distinction for the book: The individual cittam may be embodied and finite, while the traces produced by its dances may become trans-individual and continue indefinitely through other cittams. I think this also gives a fresh way of placing Valluvar's sleep–death analogy within our framework. Sleep reveals that the visible waking self is not the whole of human existence: activity, memory, and experience can assume other forms while the waking actor is absent. Death pushes the question further. The body and individual actor disappear permanently, but the traces of that person's cittam may continue dancing within the consciousness of others. So I would not yet say “cittam never sleeps” or “cittam never dies.” I would say something more defensible and, perhaps, more interesting: The dances of cittam exceed the moments in which we are consciously aware of them, and some dances exceed even the lifetime of the individual in whom they began. That proposition brings together sleep, dreams, memory, uyir, ancestors, teachers, texts, Tirumūlar, Sivavakkiyar, and Thiruvalluvar—and I think it opens an entirely new dimension of the project.
PromptStock market and how the fluctuating trend contributes within it requires some discussion. By principle, any company that makes a progress in revenue should get its stock value increased and subsequently when there is a loss for some reason, the stock value should decrease. Thus, the fluctuation is not frequent and its rare. But the way the stock market behaves one wonders whether it is really what is happening, or is it in reality are too many greedy people control the fluctuations by selling and buying their stocks too frequently to increase their values. Of course, the long time investors who do nothing gets panicked and sell and it favors greatly those who involve in almost a gambling sort of day trading. How are we going to talk about the notion of "greed" in this context? ResponseI think this is an excellent case study for the book because it forces us to distinguish economics from the psychology of cittam. We do not need to argue that stock markets are "good" or "bad." Instead, we ask: what activities of cittam are revealed by participation in them? One point I would slightly refine in your description is this: "By principle, any company that makes progress in revenue should get its stock value increased..." From a financial perspective, stock prices are influenced by more than current revenue. Investors constantly estimate future earnings, interest rates, risk, competition, technology, and countless other factors. That is why prices can move even when a company's current business has not changed. However, your philosophical point remains intact. A large part of market movement is driven not only by economic fundamentals but also by human expectations and reactions. The Market as a Collective Cittam This actually gives us a fascinating analogy. Earlier we described cittam as: a small space in which countless thoughts continuously arise and compete. The stock market resembles this on a societal scale. Millions of participants simultaneously experience: hope, fear, greed, disappointment, confidence, panic. The market becomes a visible expression of the collective dance of many cittams. Greed Is Not the Only Dance I would be careful not to reduce market fluctuations entirely to greed. Suppose someone buys stock because they believe: "This company will help society over the next twenty years." That is not obviously greed. Another buys because: "I hope to retire comfortably." Again, not necessarily greed. A third buys because: "I can make money in the next ten minutes." Now the activity of cittam is quite different. Thus, the same outward action—buying a stock—may arise from very different inner occupations. The Short-Term Dance Day trading is especially interesting. The underlying business may change very little. Yet cittam becomes occupied by: minute-by-minute movement, anticipation, fear of missing out, excitement, rapid gain, rapid loss. The object is no longer the company. The object becomes the fluctuation itself. That is psychologically significant. Long-Term Investing A long-term investor asks: "What is this business likely to become?" The occupation of cittam is: patience, analysis, trust in long-term growth. There is still desire for return. But the rhythm of the dance is slower. Panic You mentioned another important phenomenon. Long-term investors sometimes panic during market declines. This introduces another recurring movement of cittam. Fear. Notice how greed and fear alternate. When prices rise: "I should buy more." When prices fall: "I must sell immediately." The same person may oscillate between the two. A New Insight This makes me think that greed rarely acts alone. It almost always has a companion. That companion is fear. The two continually alternate. Perhaps cittam oscillates: hope → greed → fear → relief → hope This resembles the rapid succession of thoughts we discussed earlier. The Tamil Proverb Now the proverb: பேராசை பெருநஷ்டம் acquires a richer meaning. The "great loss" may occur because greed narrows attention. A person ceases asking: What is this company worth? Instead asking: How much can I gain before everyone else? The first question concerns value. The second concerns acquisition. A Broader Observation I think this example teaches something beyond finance. Many human activities can be understood similarly. Research. Teaching. Business. Politics. Even religion. Each may begin with a meaningful purpose. Over time, cittam may gradually become occupied instead by: recognition, status, competition, accumulation. The external activity remains unchanged. The inner dance changes. Cittam and Time Horizon I wonder if another useful distinction for the book is time. Short-term cittam: immediate reward, immediate fear, immediate reaction. Long-term cittam: patience, sustained purpose, delayed reward. The same person may move between these repeatedly. One Caution There is one place where I would be careful in the manuscript. It would be tempting to conclude: Frequent trading = greed. That would probably overstate the case. Some traders genuinely provide liquidity to markets, hedge risks, or follow disciplined strategies rather than acting from impulsive desire. Likewise, some long-term investors can also be driven by excessive greed. So the ethical distinction is not the financial technique itself but the occupation of cittam while engaging in it. A Possible General Principle I think this discussion points toward a broader philosophical principle: Human institutions often magnify the recurring movements of cittam. The stock market does not create greed, fear, hope, or disappointment. It provides an arena in which those movements become highly visible. The same could be said of: academic publishing (recognition), politics (power), business (competition), social media (attention), and even interpersonal relationships (attachment and expectation). In this sense, the stock market becomes a kind of laboratory for observing cittam. Prices fluctuate because countless people continuously evaluate, compare, anticipate, hope, fear, and react. The deeper philosophical question is therefore not whether markets are greedy, but how the market reveals the ordinary movements of human consciousness. That perspective fits naturally with your project: external institutions become mirrors in which the inner dances of cittam can be studied.
PromptSat, Jun 27 at 1:51 PM: Greed is another human emotion that prevails in Cittam. There is a Tamil saying, "பேராசை பெருநஷ்டம்", which means overly greedy will result to a great loss. Not sure how to take this, but everyone inherently has a desire to get more and won't be content with what is already there. Investing in stock market, having investment properties, buying CDs etc., may seem reasonable investment strategies, but inherently they imply humans desire to have more than what they have. Surely, there can be two types here, one being reasonable greed and the other being excessive greed. How does cittam deal with them? ResponseI think this is another place where our framework may depart from a simple moral classification and move toward a phenomenology of cittam. The proverb பேராசை பெருநஷ்டம் does not say: "ஆசை is wrong." It says: பேராசை leads to great loss. That distinction is philosophically important. Is Desire Natural? I think we must begin by admitting something about human life. Without desire: no child learns to walk, no student studies, no scientist investigates, no artist paints, no farmer sows seeds, no entrepreneur starts a business. In other words, ஆசை (aspiration, desire) appears to be one of the fundamental movements of cittam. Without it, much of civilization would never exist. Then Why Does Valluvar Warn Against அவா? This is where language becomes interesting. Tamil uses several related words: ஆசை அவா பேராசை These are not necessarily identical. Perhaps they represent increasing intensity. You could almost imagine: curiosity → aspiration → desire → craving → excessive greed. The Investment Example Your example is excellent because it avoids easy moral judgments. Suppose a person buys: stocks, CDs, investment property, hoping for future security. Is that greed? Not necessarily. It may be: prudence, planning, responsibility, providing for family. Now consider another case. The person already possesses more than sufficient wealth. Yet every waking thought becomes: "How can I accumulate more?" Now the activity of cittam has changed. The accumulation itself has become the dominant occupation. The Difference Lies in Occupation I think this is the key insight. The external activity may be identical. Two people both buy stocks. Internally: Person A: "I hope to secure retirement." Person B: "I cannot stop thinking about making more." Externally identical. Internally different. Thus greed cannot be defined merely by the action. It must be understood through the occupation of cittam. When Does Desire Become Greed? Perhaps the transition occurs when: the object is no longer serving life, but life begins serving the object. This seems to fit many human experiences. Money is useful. But if cittam becomes completely occupied by acquiring money, the direction has reversed. Connection to Obsession Earlier we discussed obsession. Greed may simply be: obsession with acquisition. Not merely acquisition itself. Tirumūlar's Body Verses Recall: உடம்பை வளர்க்கும் உபாயம் அறிந்தே The body must be maintained. That requires: food, shelter, resources. Therefore complete absence of material concern cannot be the message. The question is: At what point does maintenance become domination? The Proverb Now the proverb becomes clearer. பேராசை பெருநஷ்டம் The loss may not only be financial. It may be: peace, relationships, health, integrity, freedom. The irony is that greed seeks gain. Yet its occupation of cittam may produce a larger loss elsewhere. Cittam and Sufficiency This makes me think of another category. Perhaps cittam continually evaluates: "Do I have enough?" The answer may be: yes, or not yet. Greed may occur when cittam becomes incapable of answering: "Yes." No matter how much is acquired. Relation to Recognition This resembles our earlier discussion of recognition. Recognition itself is not wrong. Accumulation itself is not wrong. The question becomes: Does cittam ever experience sufficiency? If not, the dance has no natural conclusion. A New Concept I wonder whether we should introduce something like: The Threshold of Sufficiency Every human activity has a point beyond which: additional acquisition contributes progressively less to genuine well-being. The difficulty is that cittam often fails to recognize that threshold. It continues dancing as though there is no limit. The Two Avans This also strengthens the role of the observing avan. One avan says: More. The observing avan asks: Why more? What purpose does it now serve? Has this become habit rather than need? That dialogue may itself be சித்தந் திரிந்து. A Broader Pattern Notice something fascinating. Our discussions of: anger, jealousy, greed, recognition, obsession, all seem to converge. None of them are entirely foreign to human nature. All appear to begin as normal activities. The philosophical problem is not their existence. The philosophical problem is when they become the dominant occupation of cittam. I think this may lead to one of the central propositions of your book: The movements of cittam are not inherently virtuous or vicious; they are natural possibilities of human consciousness. What determines their ethical significance is not merely their appearance but the degree to which they occupy, govern, and direct the whole of cittam. That proposition has an interesting consequence. It suggests that அறம் is not the elimination of desire, anger, jealousy, or ambition, but the cultivation of a cittam that recognizes their proper place and refuses to let any single movement become its unquestioned ruler. In that sense, பேராசை பெருநஷ்டம் becomes psychologically profound: the "great loss" is not simply the loss of wealth or fortune, but the loss of freedom within one's own consciousness, where the desire to acquire more gradually comes to possess the very person who sought to possess more. I think that interpretation is remarkably consistent with both Tamil ethical wisdom and the phenomenological framework you have been developing.
PromptLet us ponder over the ideas of Thiruvalluvar's verse you just quoted. He has devoted a chapter on how to conduct அறம். He mentions many things about அறம் 'conducting good virtue', and among them he says in two verses what அறம் is: மனத்துக்கண் மாசிலன் ஆதல் 'not having any harmful thoughts in mind', and ...இந்நான்கும் இழுக்கா இயன்றது அறம் 'avoiding the four human emotions'. How does this fit in our framework where we say that cittam undergoes these dances and it is perfectly normal. What matters is how cittam captures them, analyzes them and act upon them. Instead of saying, like Valluvar says, one should avoid those dances within cittam. ResponseI think this is perhaps the deepest philosophical question we have reached. In fact, if we can answer this satisfactorily, it may become the central thesis of the book. At first sight, our framework appears to contradict Thiruvalluvar. One reading is straightforward: A good person should not have these. Our framework, however, says: Every human cittam experiences these movements. Is there a contradiction? I am beginning to think there is not. What Does Valluvar Mean by "மனத்துக்கண்"? Notice that Valluvar does not simply say: "Avoid actions." He begins with: மனத்துக்கண். The emphasis is already on the inner life. The question then becomes: What does "மாசு" mean? Traditionally: impurity, stain, blemish. But perhaps we should ask whether "மாசு" refers to: the arising of a movement, or the continued acceptance and cultivation of that movement. I think these are different. An Example Suppose anger suddenly appears. Can a human prevent its first appearance? Probably not. Modern psychology would also agree that emotions often arise before conscious deliberation. But once anger appears, several possibilities exist. It is noticed. It is examined. It is intensified. It is expressed. It is released. The appearance of anger and the cultivation of anger are not identical. "மாசு" as Habitual Occupation This leads me to a possible reinterpretation. Perhaps Valluvar is not describing: transient movements. He is describing: a cittam that has become occupied by them. There is an important difference between: anger visited. and anger became the ruler. The River Analogy Think of a river. Leaves fall into it. Branches fall into it. Mud enters it. That is natural. But suppose the river becomes permanently clogged. Now its very nature changes. Perhaps cittam is similar. Thoughts arise. Jealousy arises. Fear arises. Greed arises. Those are movements. But when cittam continually nourishes one of them, it becomes a defining feature. Perhaps that is "மாசு". Tirumūlar Helps Us Here Earlier we spent considerable time on: சித்தந் திரிந்து You consistently translated it as: refinement. If refinement is necessary, then cittam cannot already be free of every movement. Something is being refined. This fits ordinary human experience remarkably well. The Four Movements Take Valluvar's four. அழுக்காறு Comparison. Envy. Resentment. அவா Desire. Aspiration. Longing. வெகுளி Anger. Reactive emotion. இன்னாச்சொல் Speech that wounds. Notice something. Only the last one is already an action. The first three are largely internal movements. A Possible Bridge I wonder whether Valluvar is saying: Do not allow these movements to become the governing principle of cittam. That is different from saying: Never experience them. Your Own Observations Throughout our discussions you have repeatedly written: "I observed jealousy." "I observed anger." "I observed disappointment." That observation itself is already a different activity. The cittam is no longer merely experiencing. It is examining. A Different Reading of அறம் Perhaps அறம் is not: absence of human nature. Rather: the disciplined relationship to human nature. This would fit remarkably well with your framework. A Progressive Model Instead of: Pure cittam ↓ Impure cittam I think the progression may be: Human cittam ↓ Observing cittam ↓ Refining cittam ↓ Habitually refined cittam Then What Is "மாசிலன்"? This is where I think we may differ slightly from the traditional interpretation. I would not say: A person who never experiences jealousy. Rather: A person whose cittam is not governed by jealousy. Likewise: not governed by anger, not governed by greed, not governed by harsh speech. This preserves both: Valluvar's ethical demand, and your phenomenological observations. Something That Excites Me I think we have accidentally arrived at a bridge between ancient ethics and contemporary cognitive science. Modern neuroscience tells us: Emotions arise automatically. Executive functions regulate responses. Our framework says: Movements arise within cittam. The observing/refining aspect of cittam examines them before action. Valluvar says: The ideal human is one whose mind is free from stain. Perhaps all three are describing different aspects of the same human process. One Further Thought There is one more possibility that I find fascinating. Perhaps Valluvar is not describing the beginning of ethical life. He is describing its maturity. In other words: A beginner notices anger. A wiser person notices it sooner. A still wiser person is less frequently occupied by it. A மாசிலன் may be someone whose cittam has been refined over many years, so that these movements no longer linger or dominate. They may still arise—as part of being human—but they no longer settle into the mind as enduring patterns. In that sense, மனத்துக்கண் மாசிலன் ஆதல் is not an impossible demand to eliminate every passing movement of consciousness; it is the culmination of a lifelong refinement in which the dances of anger, jealousy, greed, and harshness lose their power to define the character of cittam. I think this may be where Tirumūlar and Thiruvalluvar meet. Tirumūlar emphasizes the process (சித்தந் திரிந்து—the refinement of cittam), while Thiruvalluvar describes the fruit (மனத்துக்கண் மாசிலன்—a mind no longer habitually stained). One speaks more in the language of transformation, the other in the language of ethical completion. Rather than contradicting one another, they may represent two stages of the same philosophical journey.
PromptI see your point that anger, jealousy, and perhaps other feelings such as greedy, hatred etc., should not be considered as "evil behaviors", instead these are part of the nature of cittam and dealing with them is the task one has to learn and perhaps that's what சித்தந் திரிந்து is all about. ResponseI think this may be one of the most significant shifts in our entire discussion. Up to now, we were almost implicitly treating: anger, jealousy, greed, hatred, domination, as things that should simply disappear. But the more we've discussed them, and the more you've reflected on your own cittam, the more I think that is neither psychologically realistic nor what Tirumūlar may be saying. Instead, I would state the idea this way: These are not foreign intrusions into cittam; they are recurring possibilities within the activity of cittam itself. That is a subtle but profound difference. What Does "சித்தந் திரிந்து" Mean? Earlier, you strongly objected to translating திரிந்து as "melt" or "dissolve." You preferred: refine, undergo habitual advancement, gradually transform. I think that preference now becomes even stronger. Suppose jealousy appears. If the instruction were: Eliminate jealousy. The task is almost impossible. But if the instruction is: Observe it. Understand it. Discover what gave rise to it. Learn from it. That becomes a lifelong practice. Exactly as the author you quoted suggested. A Different View of Ethics This also changes how we read Tamil ethical literature. Take the famous Kural: அழுக்காறு, அவா, வெகுளி, இன்னாச்சொல் இந்நான்கும் இழுக்கா இயன்றது அறம் Traditionally it is read as: Avoid these four. But within our framework perhaps it means something slightly richer. These four are not merely sins. They are four recurring movements of cittam. The ethical task is to recognize them before they govern action. This Fits Human Experience Better If someone says: "I have never felt jealous." I would be skeptical. If someone says: "I have learned to recognize jealousy before it controls my actions." That seems much closer to lived experience. Likewise: anger, fear, greed, attachment. Even Tirumūlar Something occurred to me while reading your message. Tirumūlar repeatedly speaks of refinement. He does not often describe humans as beginning in perfection. If refinement is necessary, then there must already be something to refine. That "something" is precisely the ordinary activity of cittam. A New Classification Earlier we classified thoughts. Perhaps now we should classify movements of cittam. Natural movements curiosity, affection, ambition, comparison, recognition, desire. Reactive movements anger, jealousy, fear, resentment, greed. Reflective movements inquiry, self-observation, compassion, understanding, restraint. Every human cittam contains all three. The question is not: Which movements exist? The question is: Which movements become habitual? Why This Matters This removes unnecessary guilt. Suppose jealousy appears. Instead of saying: "I am a bad person." One asks: "Why has this movement appeared?" That question itself is already a refinement of cittam. The same with anger. The same with fear. The Role of the Two Avans This actually gives the two-avans model a stronger philosophical role. One avan experiences: anger, jealousy, disappointment. The other avan can observe them. Not suppress them immediately. Not justify them. Observe them. Ask: "Where did this come from?" Without that observing function, cittam simply follows every movement. A Possible Reformulation I think we may now reformulate one of the central ideas of the book. Originally we were saying: Chidambara Rahasyam is the empty space of consciousness. Now I would add: That space is not empty because nothing happens there. It is empty because it is capable of containing every possible movement without being identical to any one of them. Thoughts arise. Dreams arise. Anger arises. Jealousy arises. Greed arises. Love arises. Compassion arises. They all dance. The space itself is not reduced to any one dance. One Thought That Excites Me I think we are arriving at a reading of சித்தந் திரிந்து that is different from many traditional interpretations. Not: becoming incapable of anger. Nor: becoming incapable of jealousy. But: becoming increasingly capable of recognizing, understanding, refining, and redirecting these recurring movements before they become habitual actions. That interpretation is remarkably consistent with modern psychology while remaining faithful to the language of refinement that you have emphasized from the beginning. In other words, சிவமயம் may not describe a person who no longer experiences the full range of human emotions. It may instead describe a person whose cittam has become sufficiently refined that anger, jealousy, greed, fear, attachment, and compassion are all recognized as movements within consciousness rather than unquestioningly obeyed. The transformation is therefore not the disappearance of human nature, but the maturation of one's relationship to it. I think this may become one of the central philosophical contributions of your book. It moves away from an unattainable ideal of emotional perfection toward a model of continuous refinement—a model that is psychologically realistic, resonates with lived experience, and gives fresh meaning to Tirumūlar's repeated call for சித்தந் திரிந்து.
PromptSat, Jun 27 at 9:51 AM: While I read an unrelated article, I came across these quotes from the writer about jealousy, which we are talking about here: "That means working with jealousy is often a lifelong practice." "Jealousy doesn’t necessarily go away. But it can get easier to deal with over time." "In fact, with the right tools, we can let jealousy guide us to help us make decisions in support of our well-being." Sounds like this writer is also struggling with the feeling of jealousy, which bothers the person, as much as I think it does to many in cittam. ResponseI think this is a significant observation, and it actually helps refine the framework we've been building. Notice what the author does not say. They do not say: "Jealousy is evil." Nor do they say: "A mature person never feels jealous." Instead, they say: "Working with jealousy is often a lifelong practice." That is a fundamentally different way of thinking. It treats jealousy not as a moral defect but as a recurring human activity that requires understanding. I think this aligns remarkably well with our discussion of cittam. Jealousy as a Recurring Dance Earlier we said: Thoughts arise. Then we said: Some thoughts become long invisible dances. I would now place jealousy among those long dances. Not because a person is permanently jealous. But because comparison continually reappears throughout life. For example: As children: "Why does my sibling get that?" As students: "Why did they receive the higher grade?" As researchers: "Why was that paper accepted?" As professionals: "Why did that person receive recognition?" As parents: "Why do their children seem more successful?" The objects change. The underlying activity returns. Why Doesn't It Disappear? I think this is the interesting question. Why should jealousy remain throughout life? Perhaps because comparison itself is fundamental to human cognition. Our brains constantly compare: larger/smaller, faster/slower, before/after, better/worse. Comparison is essential for learning. But comparison easily extends from objects to persons. Then cittam begins comparing identities. Jealousy as Information The sentence that caught my attention most was: "Jealousy can guide us." That is surprisingly close to something we've been moving toward. Suppose jealousy appears. Instead of immediately asking: "How do I eliminate it?" perhaps we ask: "What is this jealousy revealing?" It may reveal: an unfulfilled aspiration, disappointment, admiration, fear, insecurity, desire for recognition, longing for meaningful contribution. The jealousy itself may not be the deepest issue. It may be a signal. Tirumūlar Might Say... This reminds me of your interpretation of: சித்தந் திரிந்து You have consistently resisted the idea that refinement means suppressing everything. Instead, you've argued it means understanding and transforming. Jealousy may fit that perfectly. Rather than: eliminate jealousy, the question becomes: understand what dance has produced it. A Parallel with Anger Notice the similarity. Earlier we concluded: Anger is often not the root. It is the visible expression of something deeper. Perhaps jealousy is similar. It may be the visible expression of: comparison, attachment, longing, wounded identity. The Importance of Recognition This also connects beautifully with our previous discussion. Suppose a person genuinely contributes. Recognition does not arrive. Jealousy appears. The jealousy itself tells us: Recognition matters to this person. That is valuable information. It does not automatically tell us whether the desire is healthy or unhealthy. It simply reveals something important about the person's values. A Question for the Book This discussion suggests another principle. Perhaps cittam should not immediately classify its own activities as: good, bad. Instead, it might first ask: What is this activity trying to tell me? That is a more phenomenological approach. The activity becomes an object of inquiry. One Thing I Would Add I think there is another distinction we have not yet made. There are two kinds of jealousy. Comparative jealousy "I wish I had what they have." Destructive jealousy "I wish they did not have it." These are psychologically different. The first may motivate growth. The second may motivate harm. Tamil ethical literature generally condemns jealousy because it often develops into the second form. But the first form may simply be an indication that one has encountered something one deeply values. A Broader Insight As we've been discussing these themes, I've begun to think that many of the activities of cittam follow a similar pattern. Anger. Jealousy. Fear. Obsession. Disappointment. Recognition. None of them should necessarily be understood as final destinations. They are movements. They point toward something. The philosophical task is to ask: What deeper movement of consciousness is this revealing? I think this is one of the places where your work could become genuinely original. Much of ethical literature asks us to overcome jealousy. Much of psychology asks us to manage it. Your framework asks a different question: What does jealousy reveal about the ongoing dance of cittam? That question neither excuses jealousy nor condemns it outright. Instead, it treats jealousy as a phenomenon to be understood. If cittam can learn from its own recurring movements rather than merely suppress them, then சித்தந் திரிந்து becomes not the absence of difficult emotions but the gradual refinement of how consciousness understands and responds to them. That, to me, is a very rich philosophical direction.
